Architectural firm Bates Masi Architects has completed the Wiesler Residence project in 2008.
This 10,000 square foot, waterfront home is located in Glen Echo neighborhood in Los Angeles, California.
The Wiesler Residence by Bates Masi Architects:
“Conceived as a remodeling of a 1960’s built-up home, Wiesler faithful respect the original both inside and out, for the qualities of its original design as well as the respectful manner of the original materials.
The Wiesler Residence is sited at the crossroads of both wind and grass. It is also located in a narrow lot along the Glen Echo community, in Los Angeles. The lot faces a sloped, overgrown, and increasingly increasingly tall overhanging road. To successfully screen it, the architects chose to envelope the house almost half the ground plane, thereby creating a generous 65-foot drop to the ground, respectful of its context and pedestrian sensibilities.
The building’s front façade is effectively non-existent. Here, a drive vista extends as a series of hidden planning and “see-through walls”. The resulting feeling of natural privacy is emphasized by dark framed front walls, timber panels and stainless steel and glass doors. The rear façade, spanning the length of the house and nearly spanning the window wall, is carved out of a bi-folding pavilion space, providing a strong connection to the site and surrounding landscaped roof deck and garden courts that wrap the home and the rear garden courts.”
